Character Information
Appears in:

Morton Fretwell was a sleazy parts pirate.

He and Chandler Hennessey worked together as parts pirates. At one point, the pair trespassed into the Arápache Rez of the ChanceFolk, planning on kidnapping children to have unwound and sold at the black market. When Wil Tashi'ne told them that would be hunted down if they did so and instead offered himself—a talented guitar player—up for the safety of the others, they agreed. Wil was then sold to Roberta Griswold, to be made a part of Camus Comprix.[1] Lev Calder eventually found their names and swore to bring them back to the tribe to face justice, with Una Jacali, Wil's fiancée, offering help.[2]

Una baited the pair by tricking them into thinking she had captured Lev for them to unwind and managed to track them down. Hennessey died shortly after managing to escape, and Fretwell was captured and taken to the Rez, where it was decided that he would spend the rest of his life in prison with nothing but bread and water to survive on. He later hanged himself inside his prison cell.[3]

Physical description

He was said to be very ugly, having the "face of a goat".

  • Morton is among the characters Neal Shusterman named after a fan through a post on his Facebook page. The name was borrowed from Morton Payne and Stephanie Marie Fretwell.[4][5][6][7]
